I dont think if this was mentioned but what about a two-processor motherboard + 2 cpus? I dont know if its any different than a dual-core but since FL doesnt use multi-cores maybe this would work? There are many 2processor mobos out there.
I like the idea of having the two parts of Sirius as two servers, but wouldn't that still cause problems? Hypothetically, here's a scenario:
You and a group of friends are part of a newly formed traders faction, running a huge haul of weapons, silver and cardamine from Liberty to the Outer Systems. As you exit Liberty and head to the Border Worlds, a message pops up that you're nearing the edge of the server. Thinking little of it, you fly to the jump hole, and jump through. Your friends come out. You don't. Guess what? This server is full.
Now, I'm pretty inexperienced when it comes to running servers, but it seems to me that a scenario like this could happen and have large and small impacts, both on fun-factor, and that you might have been under escort by several fighters. Now, without those fighters, you have to make it through dangerous space alone. First of all, is this scenario possible? Second of all, I would like to say I do support the two server idea to increase player limit (Screw you ANZLAG, I want to have fun!), but I'm wary of the above scenario happening.
*Sigh*
For those of you talking about multiprocessor servers, this won't help anything.
' Wrote:Raising the limit beyond 200 on a single server is technically not possible. Flserver can only use 1 core so dual-core is enough (1 core for flserver, 1 core for supporting processes). We would need a dualcore CPU running at 5GHz or more. These are not available and most probably they are not going to be available in future. The only remaining option is overclocking. We currently have an Intel E8400 running at 4GHz (Original value is 3GHz). It's capable to run stable at 4,5GHz but last summer we lowered it to 4GHz for stability reasons. Once the mod beta-testing is over (and the crashes as well) I'll raise it back to 4,5GHz but even this frequency doesn't allow us to raise the 200 limit.
No matter how many processors you add, it won't help if we keep using a single server (as in FlServer). The program can't make a use of multiple processors. If you wanted to run more FlServer instances on multiple processors, you get back to the issue of multiple servers running from one database. Money won't save us.
Anyway, I don't think this is really an issue currently. The server seems to work fine when it's not being attacked. Only rarely do we fill all slots.
well the way i see it... they were talking about splitting map into two servers... why not use this setup but split it into several different servers (this would also get rid of the chance of one of the two servers being full) all hosted on one machine? then you have somthing like 200 max people in BW 200 max in EW 200 max in Liberty etc?
Although Discovery does have a rather large playerbase (especially when compared to that of other servers), it's not nearly big enough to justify such a number of servers running simultaneously just for Discovery. If we had two and thereby have 400 player slots, even that would be a lot, in my humble opinion.
THEY TOLD ME I COULD BE ANYTHING SO I BECAME A SIGNATURE PLS HLP
I have to agree there a litle. 400 players would be just a waste in my opinion. If we could have the limit raised to 250 i think it would be more than enough.
