I have no anti-virus and my computer doesn't seem to even be trying to connect to the server - the message comes up instantly.

I have rebooted three times, rebooted modem, rebooted mod...

check firewall.
I give up. It has to work.

EDIT. Ping the server.

No idea what's causing this, it should be all fixed now (server-side).

Tried again after a while, but it still won't connect. And it's not as if the server is down; there are 123 people on there!

This is the same thing that happens to me, even on LAN. Also, are you on Vista? I am.

Yes, I am on vista.
But it has worked before.

EDIT: Tried compatability options but no luck. Needless to say, I am a leeeeeetle pissed off. And to top it off I don't think it will work when I'm in boarding (proxy server) anyway... so this is extra annoying.
