At the moment I feel jump holes aren't jump-holey enough. For random spatial anomalies they're pretty safe and predictable, don't you think?I want traveling through the border worlds systems to be dangerous, not like traveling through New York except without the trade lanes!
So how about giving ships that travel through JHs a random amount of damage?Biased to low or zero amounts of damage, with the very small chance that you might take 90% hull damage or lose some of your cargo.Maybe larger ships would be more susceptible to these dangers.I would see unlawful ships taking less damage than lawful ships, because JHs are their main mode of transport from system to system and they would have more technical experience with these things.
Would this be possible? Is it just downright insane?
I think it says somewhere that Jumpholes aren't actually dangerous to travel through normally, it's just Ageria propaganda that says they are dangerous, so that people will buy and use their Jumpgates.
The only danger with Jumpholes is that they are phase aligned, and colapse on themselves after time, and re-open in different places. Something like that would be difficult to program with out Source code I think.
Though, I wonder if making Jumpgates inaccessable to anyone Red to the jumpgate is practicle?
EDIT: Also, I think jumpholes to lawful guard systems should be swapped with Jumpgates.
I always like the idea of jump holes doing some random damage to the ship, because of their nature. I see them as some kind of Einstein-Rosen Bridges. These thing's aren't stable andmight collapse at every point of time.
What would be even better: placing the jump holes at some random point within a certain radius after each server restart.
applying a "chance" to jumpholes to damage the ships components, systems and hull in a jump - depending on its mass was suggested.
but we decided not to implement it - BECAUSE ... too many factions rely on jumpholes - and it would be unfair to have - for example - a corsair having his cruiser damaged ( even if its only a chance ) - while house militaries travel safely.
YES - exactly THAT is roleplay. - but its over the limits of what is fair play in terms of gameplay ( its a game ). - so yes... its perfectly possible, - and no... at that point ( back in 4.85 developement ) we decided against it. not for RP reasons - but for ooc reasons.
