With windows 7 just around the corner, I want to merge my main drive partitions without loosing data. My win xp partition is 20gig and I heard win 7 is 20 gig install.

So how do I do this, remember without loosing data...

This is possible with a program called Acronis Disc Director, a program you need to buy. PM me for 'more information'.

You don't need Acronis, thats a commercial solution to a problem that can be fixed for free.

Google 'Gparted Live', and then read the documentation. Its a live Linux distro dedicated to partitioning your drive, and its fully featured, and best of all free.

Burn the .ISO to a CD, and then boot. Make sure you have your boot priority set in your BIOS to check the CD/DVD/Blue-ray etc drive first though.

Another question, does a custom install of win 7 wipe the drive or do you just need to reinstall things like firefox etc

Win7 kicks out the WinXP boot loader. If you want to install both, you will lose the ability to boot with Windows XP.
And it is the best way, if you save your data, format the drive and install a fresh copy of Windows afterwards.

Gparted gets major ++++ from me. Its an awesome program to have.
Owning legit copy of win 7 (cough* cough* ) I suggest you do a full wipe and install win 7 fresh. you won't regret it.
also, get Opera 10, faster.;)

sure, works. I've been loyal FFox user for years, but lately, it's just not the same. Buying a new partition and dual booting the whole thing works as well.
