Perhaps I seem...out of touch. Perhaps you do not know me, or what must be done. Rest assured, my story I now tell. My name does not matter, so please, do not ask it.
I used to be insane, but not anymore. By definition, insanity is repeating the same things expecting to get a different result. Life at home, as a child, was very well structured, and I was trained well. I learned my ABCs, to read, count by twos and tie my shoes...But the one thing I never did learn until I left home was that not everyone is as fortunate as I myself was.
I suppose you want me to start from the beginning. Very well. When a man and a woman like each other, really like each...Not that far back? I was born on Freeport 4 in Magellan. My father worked as a transport pilot, ferrying supplies to and from Java Station. The pay was good enough that after a trying day at work, my mother was able to quit her job as an inventories clerk in Biodome 1 to take over my schooling. Neither of my parents had ever progressed beyond the standard schooling granted all children on their respective childhood homes, and they wanted for me to attend Cambridge University when I was old enough.
I had always been a bright child, able to grasp the concepts presented me by my mother. My one failing, if it can be called such, was that I had extremely limited social contact. I do not think of that as a terrible blight on my history. Rather, I am grateful for it, as it helped me to blend in well with the Lane Hackers. But I get ahead of my story. I began attending the U of C in 804AS. I declared a major in computer science with a minor in military history. I did well, and made the Dean's List for ten consecutive terms. It would have been more, but for a social studies class in Winter 807 that I barely passed. I never did graduate, though.
In the summer of 808AS, I had the good fortune to meet a small boy, perhaps eight or nine. I noticed his right shoe was untied, and the way he was chasing his younger brother, I feared he would trip and injure himelf. I mentioned the fact to him, and he looked confused. I pointed to his foot and repeated what I had said. He looked at the ground, around in circles, and said in a small voice "I don't know how to tie my shoes." I asked if anyone had ever tried showing him how, and he said no. I pressed, what about your preschool teacher? and he merely shook his head and walked off to find his brother.
I was, quite simply, shocked. Every small boy should know this fundamental bit of knowledge by age four, yet here this boy of at least twice that was admitting he had never learned. I said fortunate because of this precise shock. It turned my entire worldview on its head. I began to question the roles of parents in the instruction of their children. More than that, I began to realize that schools, no, society as a whole was configured in such a way as to set children up to fail.
I dropped out of school and bought a small ship with the remains of my school funds and summer job. I wandered around Bretonia, exploring and realizing just how pervasive this apathy towards education was. I stopped back at Freeport 4 to see my parents, only to see my father storming off to the hangar with luggage, closely followed by a tirade originating from my mother. She took one look at me, spat, cursed, and went back to what home was now hers, and hers alone. I never did see my father again. I do not believe he is dead; he is far too resourceful for that, but I do miss him sometimes.
I did not want to hang around to have the wrath of my mother descend on my shoulders, and so I took my leave of Magellan and headed for Liberty. The Customs officials were, well, officious, and I was well pleased to be through with that stage. I began to frequent the bars on Pittsburgh. On one particularly memorable occasion, a Junker brought in a load of scrap, and with him, a particular odor of an ale I knew I had to sample. He took me to Rochester, a base deep in the scrap field behind Manhattan.
I will freely admit I performed a number of slightly imbecilic stunts while at Cambridge, not the least of which involved entering the staff mainframe and setting a random number generator to govern class assignments. Suffice to say that there were more than a few extremely perturbed professors of history that attempted to teach a class on economics, or gynecologists teaching astronavigation. I removed the offending code before I was caught. Incidentally, this was the term I had social studies.
The ale I had scented had more of a kick than I had anticipated, and in my drunkenness I may or may not have spoken about such academic subversiveness. Regardless of how it became known, I was approached the next day by a man who identified himself only as Utah. He offered me a proposal: Put my technical expertise to work to bring down the corrupt and broken system that I had observed churning out ill-prepared young men and women. Naturally, I accepted, and Utah took me to meet Gold, Juno and Hoc, gunner, engineer and comms technician, respectively, aboard the gunship Omaha.
I joined the crew as Sword, technical officer, but they always called me Omaha, saying I was almost a part of the ship itself. The previous Sword had apparently died in an electrical fire started when a Naval cruiser hit the ship with an EMP blast. For several months things went well. We brought down shipping convoys, ambushed lone fighters. I began to realize, though, that this wanton destruction of property was not going to fix the mad progression of a corrupt system. And so I began to foment mutiny.
