my bc i have anywere from 1650 to 2700 alltho its a "command criser" and its got a battallion (if i got the numkbers right) of combat ready soldiers but the ship crew itself is 600-800 the rest are either soldiers or pilots for the shuttles and such i have aboard mygunboat i crew more like a patrol boat or frigate and she has 25-50 men
well gunboat in terms of wrld war two is a PT boat(which had like 15 guys and was all wood) to mabye something the size of a corvette modetrn patrol boats(at least in australia) have around 20 people(armidale class)i base my gunboat off that you also gotta remember these ships look considerably larger then there "water navy" counterparts and yes tech helps you still need alotta crew for mantince and such(besides sure i rely on alotta tech(the ship has an AI like in halo)but i still use alotta crew)
It depends on How advanced is your gunboat. For example The zoners just changed their gunboat a few months ago so it should be having some Hi tech Equipment because of which it wont need many crew members
You need a Captain of the ship.
Naturally most Capital Ships have an Executive officer.
If it is a military vessel it sometimes carries a boarding party.
You naturally have a navigation officer perhaps.
Perhaps a team of 2-3 people working for engines.
A medical staff of some type, though this can only be one or two with a variety of problems treated by machines.
Weaponry officers, 1-3 depending on the size of your vessel.
Maybe an Engineer or two for just regular tech support.
A cook, you always need a cook right?
Regular staff to man any other facilities you may want/have need of on your ship.
So all in all around 15-30 guys sounds about right.

I designed the Outcast Gunship to run on a complement of three. I realize that's unusually low, but considering the low Outcast population and the relatively high degree of automation we tend to use in our fleets I figured it appropriate. The Gunship has a tight cockpit with three stations (Pilot, Nav/Fire Control, and Systems), bathroom, bunks for three, and facilities required for extended operation (water cracking, artificial gravity, etc). Assuming the crew have stocked food they could theoretically survive in space for several months. The biggest enemy would be cabin fever.

My Lane Hacker Gunship, MNS Apparition, has 1 crew member - the person flying it, either Ayumu Ishida or Tiana Santini. Almost everything is computer controlled, as you'd likely expect from a small gunship built by the Lane Hackers.
It can support larger crews, but every bit of room that could be used for reinforced armor is; realistically the Apparition just doesn't have the room for more than three or four people to work in reasonable comfort.
Which suits its paranoid owner just fine. Its combat effectiveness has suffered some as a result, but it works well enough for short-range recon.
It strikes me as a bit odd that people keep mentioning boarding crews and marines and soldiers and strike teams occupying their ships.
How exactly do these military personnel get from your ship to the target? Last I checked there's no such thing as star-trek transporter pads in freelancer, nor do ships as small as gunboats or cruisers have the capability to carry a boarding shuttle/freighter. You're not going to be physically latching onto the airlock of an enemy ship in battle, either, not unless you manage to completely disable their shields, weapon systems, and engines - all somehow without damaging the ship to the point of structural breach or complete destruction.
The only ships I see ever having the need to carry marines or similar military personnel are Carriers, Battleships, and landing craft for assaulting planets - and the latter dont really exist (yet). Carriers and battleships both have the ability to, in-rp, carry a shuttle/freighter for boarding actions, and even then those boarding ships can only be used against another battleship or carrier (because those are the only ships large enough to have a docking bay for the boarding craft to land in). Even in those situations, you still have to manage to disable the shields and weapon systems of the enemy ship to give your shuttle a chance to land without being blown up or running into a forcefield surrounding the target.
All in all, I just dont think space marines really have a place in freelancer starship combat.
for my gunboat il leither hard dock (as gunboats are nimble buggers)or EVA insertions(when the targets stationary and im point blank its also impossable for guns of capitol caliber to hit infantry)for my BC she wil lhard dock if needed*forced boarding anyone)or shes got shuttles
My Salvager (biggest ship I currently fly) is mostly controlled by the VI and connected robots. I only do the talking and take manual control of the ship when things get sticky.
