At the moment ships are submitted randomly, and unless people know what they're doing or talk to a designated 'dev' it's difficult to get your work into the mod from what I can see. Along with that, peoples opinions on models and textures vary, so trying to get a clear picture as to whether a ship should go in or not is difficult at best, and the decision can be made quickly by someone and then regretted later.

So here is my proposal:

1. Someone posts a topic in THIS forum (Ship Submissions) with a ship they want to submit to the public for feedback. They must have a render of the ship model PLUS it textured. At this time no hitbox is required. This thread must have a poll with the following options:

1. I like it, put it in the mod.
2. With a few changes, I would like it in the mod.
3. No, I don't like it, keep it out.

This thread remains open for 3 weeks. During that time, the community votes, discusses it, and at any time the modeller can either remove their model or change it and create a new thread and thus poll options for the changed model. The old thread get's either closed or deleted.

2. Once three weeks has passed, and the modeller still wishes it to be submitted, the votes are checked. If there is 50% or more for option 1, see point 3. If it has 50% or more on number 2, the modeller has the option to change it or ask Igiss for a 'get in free' pass. You'd need to beg to him, I have no idea if he would or would not grant this. Option 3 is pretty much the same.

3. The model, textured, must now be sent to a designated 'checker'. At the moment this could be Frozen or me, I don't know who else might be willing to/suitable to do this. This person would check the model for symmetry, stretched textures, or any other faults in the model. If a hitbox can be made by the original modeller good, if not, beg to Frozen.

4. The model get's either a yes or a no from the designated checker. This person MUST provide reasons as to why he (or she) denied it if indeed they do. The original modeller is free to resubmit at any time, I don't know whether they would need to go through the three week voting system again or not, something to be discussed.

5. If the model is accepted, the 'checker' moves it to the developers forum, where it is placed into the next update for the mod.

Please vote, discuss, provide feedback and otherwise argue:)

-Seth

I like it, it seems like a good idea, any system is better than the slapdash affair we have right now, and this one is actually well thought out, and it seems like it would work.
Thumbs up.

Sounds like a really good idea to me, except for the begging part:Pbut that's the way it is I guess ...
Still, it would help a lot in clearing the mess that's usually around the ship submissions right now ...

Yes by checker is not definite yes. While model may be good in all aspects it also has to be useful in terms that mod actually needs model of that type...

Another thing...i would insist that working hitbox is submitted with the model...and if we find anything wrong in later tests that original modeler must fix it...begging for hitbox is not a option and i fear it would come to begging to much...

Two good points Doom. The checker could perhaps have that job or the community would take it into consideration while voting perhaps?

Also, hitboxes are very nasty to get your head around, take Jinx for example, makes amazing models but can't hitbox. It would be a shame if we demanded a hitbox and because of a lack of one didn't accept a model.

Its a good idea, but i would add one thing, put here topic with sumbmited ships, so there wont be milion liberty ships (carriers especially). So make it clear, whats in mod, what we are replacing, or keeping in there and also to inform people which models are needed.

No.

Models are an ever-developing thing. Frankly, we don't need to interfere with the creative process. I'm trying to build a work of art here, not fill out a form. We don't need to make modeling any more difficult than it already is; Bureaucracy is bad when mixed with art. Bureaucracy makes problems.

this idea is already been implemented, to be honest- just applied in a different fashion.

1. people make threads about models, and after all the community hullabaloo, submit it via pm/email to the relevant people (doom, jinx, me, etc).

2. those people then proceed to check the submission for bugs and errors first. if there are errors, they are given back to the original person, listing what the problems are and what needs fixing. with the recent thread i made about quality control for discovery, there is now a "minimum" expectations list that needs to be "checked" before any submissions are made- failure to fulfil all of the options results in automatic rejection.

3. assuming the submission is fine, its posted on the dev forums, where the actual practical use of the model is discussed. prime example: the dev team would be reluctant to include a model of optimus prime with 20 battleship turrets strapped to his arms, legs, chest, and head, but would be somewhat welcoming of a replacement model for say.. the outcast dreadnought. (example of what is needed, not wanted kind of situation).

4. the devs will not fix anyone's stuff for them- if this happens for one person, -everyone- just decides to beg for help instead of learning to fix their mistakes.

5. this is complicating matters for a reason i cannot really see, and is somewhat unneeded. so no, i dont really think this is something that is necessary.

A fair point Eppy. My proposal doesn't make it easy to submit changes to models.

On a seperate note, I need to fix your dreadnought, thank you for reminding me:)
