Many, many mods have managed to balance fighters against Capitals. Hell, the mod I came from had a fantastic balance.

It takes work, it takes time. Discovery has gone through massive changes in the past 2 years and it's still going on, but it is calming down.
There are less threads about 'TEH LOLCAPS ARE COMING! RUN FOR THE HILLS AND SAVE THE BABIES!' and the ever so lovely 'I NO WANT BOMBERS, I WANT TO RULE SPACE WITH CRUISER'.

Give it time and just remember that it is possible.

I'm not saying that the game isn't balanced - it's pretty good the way it is. I'm saying that balancing killed the core of what a capital ship is supposed to be. You should be able to rule space with a cruiser :/ it shouldn't be such easy pickings against a handful of ships that cost an infinitesimally small portion of what the cruiser cost

I'm happy with the fact that two heavier vhf's can own a cruisser and that 4 outcast sabres can kill 2 legates.

I'm not happy with that. But I'm willing to swallow it if that's what it takes to prevend lolcaps from becoming nearly unstopable.

Uh, there would be a class to counter it, other cap ships. Also bombers would still do a pretty good job, just not quite as good as now as they would face less risk of dying.

The whole issue is how many people are required to join the fight with every capital ship added to an engagement (bombers to counter the capital ships, fighters and gunboats to counter the bombers, and more fighters to counter the fighters and gunboats to counter the bombers). Making everything tougher to kill and thus require more numbers to kill would only exacerbate the problem :/

Small numbers of fighters and bombers in FreeSpace can be very significant, and yet capital ships there are still very scary things.

I'm not saying we should turn Freelancer into FreeSpace - I'd just go play FreeSpace if I wanted that - but some of the concepts there may perhaps work in Freelancer. In FreeSpace, fighters are quite capable of taking out subsystems (nav, sensors, engines etc.) and turrets, and can indeed sometimes take the capital ships out entirely, though that tends to require quite some time. The concept is one that might perhaps be applicable to Freelancer.

Well, if we assume that you provided the "lol" in your opening post, and we provided the "no" in the following posts, then, yes.

Capital ships will never be the ultimate pwn machines of rape, mainly due to limited player slots and time constraints.
