So recently I bought and have been playing Battlefield Bad Company 2, and some of the servers have an interesting feature to prevent swearing. Whenever any swear word is put into chat, the game strips you of all weapons and gadgets, leaving you defenseless until you die and respawn.
I was curious if such a thing might be implementable in Discovery, via FLhook. Of course, some minor swearing is used in an in-RP manner, but the major terms (which for obvious reasons I cant list here) could apply.
You use these words in local or system chat, FLhook identifies them, and temporarily places a drain on your powercore just like the drain seen when cruising - effectively giving you zero power for weapons and being unable to do anything other than fly around like a target. Once you die, the effect wears off.
The system could also be applied to terms which are blatantly out of roleplay/character. Smiley faces, lol, wtf, etc. etc. in local and system chat. For obvious reasons these should not apply to group chat, I've seen some of the best players on the server say things in group chat that typically arent acceptable, but when you're with friends most people dont care. PM's are debatable, sometimes the swearing and insulting does take place in PM's, so maybe they should be included as well.
We've discussed this so many times amongst the Admin team and each time we come upon the problem that some words contain swearwords and terms that could be considered leetspeak. FLhook is not terribly sophisticated and won't differentiate between a word containing the offensive term and just the offensive term. Which would leave some ships getting slapped for innocuous words. Not ideal.
Saint Del is considered a holy healer of diseases of children, but also as a protector of cattle.
The problem with anti swear things, is because they cant difrrentiate between the thing in context, and the thing. " give me that bit, chuck" Would become " give me that***** Uck ". Things like that are why this stuff dosent get implemeneted often.
