Well, thats easy, don't go to Manhattan in a ship that carried an ID that is hostile to the factions there.
I mean, you just want to RP with the players there, so you don't need to do it in a ship that risk having to fire shots at anybody there, do you ??
Oh wait, you want the RP to end up with some PvP as well ? Well, then you run the risk of having NPC's coming to the aid of your target. Thats just the way it is supposed to be.

Nope, that I have no problem with, but often, there are enemy NPCs at a base that is friendly to you, they also spawn like crazy in some seemingly remote area of space...

Or, for instance, Outcast Sabre NPCs at the tau-23 jump hole with mixed infernos and cd's, instantly dropping your shield the microsecond you jump into Orkney from t-23 and doing quite some hull damage as well. All that in less than a second.

And plenty of other annoying instances were already pointed out in this thread...

NPCs going pew pew?

Buy an enhanced thruster.

Move your mouse to the edge of the screen and press the space bar for mouse flight,

Hold down 'tab' + press enter,

Stop holding down Tab + press enter again.

Talk all you want with NPCs desperately trying to hit you and failing.

Also,

Read my above comment about inferno Sabre NPCs camping some jumpholes and the like...

Believe me, I know very well how to evade.

Define Lots of "enemy NPCs at bases that are friendly to you"... Friendly doesn't equal Neutral..

I had a conversation with a player on Skype yesterday that thought his char was broken or corrupt, because suddenly the base and the npc faction ships for the base owners turned hostile to him.
I have gotten permission to post that conversation here :
Quote:[25-05-2010 23:15:22] AnonymousGreek: good evening, can I snatch a minute of your time?
[25-05-2010 23:17:54] A&L-Guy:Goie avond, wat is het probleem ?
[25-05-2010 23:18:37] AnonymousGreek: well... the ship we talked about earlier this week, Kaizoku|Nichibotsu
[25-05-2010 23:18:44] AnonymousGreek: it appears to be messed up
[25-05-2010 23:18:53] AnonymousGreek: my KSP and KNF rep is neutral
[25-05-2010 23:19:04] AnonymousGreek: when I get close to a planet it stays neutral for a while
[25-05-2010 23:19:20] AnonymousGreek: and without doing anything, the docking ring, lanes and bases around me all go hostile
[25-05-2010 23:21:22] A&L-Guy:Not messed up. Normal. A ship belonging to a faction that is Allied to KSP/KNF or the owner of the bases, which you are hostile with, has come into range. Its Allied status beats your Neutral status with the base owners. And since it is hostile to you, the bases and npcs etc will honour their Allied status with it, and join in attacking you.
[25-05-2010 23:22:29] A&L-Guy:Get better rep - i.e. Non-white, with the faction owners. That means you are allied with them, and therefore they wont attack you, even if an allied NPC ship that is hostile to you, comes into range.
[25-05-2010 23:22:46] A&L-Guy:Standard game mechanics which we can't change.
[25-05-2010 23:22:50] AnonymousGreek: aah I see, so it never happened before because there weren't any NPC's earlier
[25-05-2010 23:23:38] A&L-Guy:Another reason why NPC's add spice to the Sirius universe. You now need to really think who and how much you want to be friends with the various houses.
[25-05-2010 23:24:15] AnonymousGreek: I see
[25-05-2010 23:24:26] AnonymousGreek: ok so I was worried over nothing:)
[25-05-2010 23:25:27] AnonymousGreek: alright, thanks for telling me:)
[25-05-2010 23:26:03] A&L-Guy:Mind if I post this on the forums ?
[25-05-2010 23:26:17] AnonymousGreek: what do you mean?
[25-05-2010 23:27:08] A&L-Guy:There is an ongoing thread about NPCs.. I want to show why NPC's spawning when server is full, is a good thing, since it makes it far more interesting and complex to be in space.
[25-05-2010 23:27:38] AnonymousGreek: ah sure, just blank my name out:D
[25-05-2010 23:28:02] A&L-Guy:Ill change it to AnonymousGreek

See - You now need to think more about stuff - More interesting IMHO.

I find ordinance such as CDs and missiles stop tracking once player count gets above a certain level. Kinda annoying when you're the weaker fighter trying to stop the bigger VHF with more guns from drifting and jousting you over and over.

If this is happening clearly there's a bit of a load on the server. I'd prefer players' weapons work properly than deal with 127357453 Titans in Omega 49 if given the choice.

No, again, not like that at all. I mean, extremely hostile. A lot has been said about Corsair NPCs at Outcast bases and Outcast NPCs just outside Corsair base in Etna. Also, GRN NPCs deep behind enemy lines in Languedoc (for instance, they regularly spawn just outside planet Quillian - and I mean, right beside the docking rings).

These are just two instances I can think of the top of my head. But I bet there are plenty others.

edit:@dodike: on the side note, I find the 412391238 Outcast NPCs outside Buffalo intriguing... I mean, did Outcasts suddenly take over Buffalo?

I can't stand being rammed over by hostile NPCs right in front of my home base 10 times a minute. It makes me RAEG a lot. It also creates long queues at JG, I get rammed 321312132 times before I jump. I used trade when there were 150 and more players online but now it's annoying regardless of how many people are in game. Also every second lane is disrupted by annoying fighters who shoot without any roleplay and CD me all the time, not to mention the ramming.

I'm not saying remove them completely but tune them down, this is too much right now. I don't mind 43242334290 Rogues near Buffalo but what are they doing in front of lawful bases? Go on suicide mission? They die as always but then new swarm spawns and ramming ritual continues.

Strangely, Orkney is one of the only places I love the NPCs.

I love getting in between fights with BH dessies and OC sabers with infernos, even more so in a funboat or transport. its dangerous and risky to go out there in a transport staring down NPCs with infernos, heck, they have taken out my BC before.

I just like fighting high level NPCs. when I die, I don't have to stay out of the bloody system for four hours.

P.S.

High level NPCs also give you Faction pilots:)

NPCes are GOOD. They are enhancing game environment, giving live atmosphere of space where trains and patrols are flying around. But, we are talking about amount of them. When you jumping to fight 1 vs 1 on your pirate with navy near (in few k off) lane\gate\station its annoy when 30 navy\police patrols spawn (got bless if without cruisers\BSes), then 100 convoys with 300 annoying escort ships are starting to shoot you, then another crap of some kind spawns ... well, it pisses off, coz you should run from 1000 npces. But if you do - leave system for 4 hours. Not cool i'd say.

If there is a way to make bots to spawn not that often, like 1-2 enounter per area, so you can meet train with 2 ships in escort and 3 police ships patrolling. Not 1000 police and 300 trains.

I love NPCs but i don't think this is outweighed by them all wanting my RP Cargo, nor do I think it is outweighed by them all hating me because I dropped a couple of mines/tcds on my opponents and they were stupid enough to be in range.

If we could change that? Is there anyway to stop them thinking certain cargo is OORP? e.g. you need a certain number before they start bothering you?

I'm guessing we can't turn off their aversion to friendly fire or it wouldve been done before...
