Ok, some of you will say that piracy has no rules. But I have to disagree. Piracy is an important type of roleplaying that many players prefer to other types, and we should respect their choice. On the other hand, turning piracy into terrorism is unacceptable. That's why I'm proposing those simple rules.

Piracy Rules

1. Pirates can attack military ships of level 30 and above without warning.

2. Pirates must demand goods and/or money from trader before opening fire. Trader who is ready to pay must stop immediately and answer in system or personal chat. If the trader does not stop, or stops and does not pay for unacceptable amount of time, or pays unsufficient sum, the pirate has a right to open fire immediately.

3. Server administrators have a right to edit reputation for pirates and other characters aiding pirates (except for traders). If the pirate tries to improve reputation with lawful factions using bribes or other methods, he or she is subject for temorary ban.

What in the event of clan war, for example, pirate clan A wants to sever lawful clan b's trade route by destroying loaded freighters. Would there still have to be threats to drop the cargo?

If so, would it still apply if a lawful clan wanted to attack a pirate clans trade routes?

Wel, pirates do have rules. Just take a look to XVI century history and you will find that pirates lived according to a strict code of conduct.

For those who think that piracy has no rules. Start your investigation here. Follow links, google, etc... you will discover that im right.

i'm not saying that piracy has no rules, i'm saying what happens in a clan war if you want to attack another clans trade route without actually stealing the cargo.

SF would never attack a pirate unless they were:

1) Hostile to us

2) carrying forbidden cargo

or

3) Generally rude to us :)

Still dosn't awnser the question, lets try again.

If two clans are at war, and they want to disrupt the enemies trade routes, do they have to 'pirate' as in ask for cargo to be dropped, or can they just go ahead and destroy the ship and cargo?

Just look at the Rules of Engagement. It's kinda universal.

Transports are largely left alone unless they're carrying contraband, otherwise, they're left alone.

If I am at war.. with say AW...

and Korrd or Dab show up in their freighters and pass through SF space on a trade run, I'd scan them, see where they're going, and let them go on their merry way if they're not carrying anything illegal.

That make sense?

It doesn't matter; most people's traders don't have a tag, thus not a part of a faction. That means you can't attack them because of the war; you have to attack them as if they were a nonfaction player

Whoa, now are these traders working for the faction or for themselves? Because, IMO if they're working for the factions then they should have the tags.

While a war PvP rules do not act, but this applies only to wars between factions of same alignment (pirate vs pirate, lawful vs lawful). As pirates are assumed to oppose lawfuls, they are always at war.
