The main jackpot is, if you take the annuity option, the full $500,000,000. Divide that by 26 (annual payments) gives you 19.23 mil per year, and then 25% Federal tax off that, so 14.4 mil per year, after 26 years, you end up with $375 mil, less any state taxes on top of that if your state taxes lottery winnings - some of them (California included, amazingly enough) do NOT.

Cash option - meaning you take the lump sum payout - is $359 mil, knock 25% off of that for federal taxes, gives you the lump sum of between $250 - $270 mill, depending (again) on state taxes.

So technically you're only turning a third of a billion into a quarter when you're talking about the cash option. But I have a real good philosophy - take the cash and RUN!

I happen to have a low opinion of greed & consumerism and I'm smart enough to know being that rich would destroy me from the inside out, so I reckon I'd need to burn though it fast before the money changes my ass for the worst. After setting up my small circle of friends & family for life, I'd do primarily one of two things:

Create a med-mj co-op farm in every state where legal & devote the rest of my life & fortune to ending federal pot prohibition

OR

Follow the example of Willie Nelson & create a town somewhere in the Hill Country

I'd use the money to build the infrastructure of a small, completely Green-running energy grid & use that as a stepping stone to lure union-friendly employers. Preferably software companies, bio-diesel manufacturers, distilleries/breweries, wind farmers, ect & name the place "Erinloch, Texas"

Put it in the bank, live on interest.

In NZ that would be like 12 million a year minimum.

I'd quit the job I have (not liking it much but it pays the bills). Then find a safe place to put all that money, and get a rottweiler with a fixation on genitals to deal with "investors" who come begging at my door. I'd offer a few select persons a major boost in their life on the financial side - with that much cash, those who -were- your friends beforehand deserve to benefit from it. I'd probably fund Disco for life too (on that scale, it's peanuts what a server costs).

Beyond that? Doubt I'd change much. I don't like big houses or status symbols like flashy cars. My life as is is fine.

Dump the job, set up some friends and family for life, travel, sail, travel, snowboard, explore, adventure, enjoy. Would I move? Yes. Would it change my life? Damn right. Would it change me? Damn right. You can't be the same person going from getting by to rich bastard, however much you might think you can. Those that have tried tend to end up unhappy or dead.

I like 'burg's take on it all. I think I might end up doing something similar.........

I'd have surfing holidays on Hawaii, Bali or Australia as long as I want.

They should just set it up so that you win whatever amount of money so that after the taxes you get the advertised winnings.

I dunno what I would do with that much money, maybe buy a computer that works properly or a new chair for my living room. I am not an exciting person really... though I may invest in art programs, maybe take a few courses in flash animation then you know buy flash itself.

Sudden wealth, hmm, well I suppose I won't get it.
The main reason is that I don't want to get any kind of such presents.
