I have had this problem before, though it stopped when I switched OS. Ever since I used W7 (after getting it to work at all) freelancer hasn't crashed unless there was something wrong with the server.

A thought:

Make this a full PvP/testing server
Make restarts for NPC factions and give have the restarts give you a Starflier on the a base in the guard system (If the said faction has one) with most money possible with full rep of the faction.. etc.. you know where I am getting at.
