Swearing....

Ok I'm gonna go out on a very, very thin limb here..... I noticed a few sanctions lately on swearing. I don't have a problem with that. But with the current zero-tolerance policy (which I also don't have a problem with) I do have a concern on what constitutes a cuss word. I don't wanna come home from work one day and find all my credits gone coz one man's <bleep> is another man's <boing>.

Firstly, there are obvious offensive words, you all know what they are and I'm not gonna spell them out. But there are others living in a grey-area, to which I apply the "Simpsons Rule"... ie. if they are heard on the Simpsons, a rated PG show, then I assume they're ok in chat. Examples:

damn
bastard
ass/arse
bugger

Secondly, with the "really bad words", I get the impression that splatting them out ("You ****!") or some other pseudo-censure ("You <bleep>!") is not acceptable.

I'm just trying to gauge the community's stance on words like these. And of course we're talking strictly IC. Cheers.

o.

EDIT: I should add if the word is heard in Freelancer, then it must be acceptable too! (eg. Trent says "bastard" IIRC)

they should be used mostly for rp. a little bit for showing disappointment, and absolutely no tolerance for ooc insulting.

NPC: "Those bastards killed one of my men."

Hence I think bastard is ok. a**, Im not so sure about. I know my son isnt allowed to say it. But he's 6, so I dont know.

Like I've said before, keep it RP and dont use the obviously offensive words and you should be ok. Dont personally insult anyone via ooc.

Yeah, I'd like this cleared up. I don't see how bastard can be allowed in any way, especially since one of the SCRA got fined for calling someone an 'Idiot'.

It's down to the powers that be, not us mortals.

A sensitive topic, but I agree - this needs to be clarified crystal clear. It's better to have a list of allowed swear words (for RP purposes) than to have confused people sanctioned.

I say that the administrators come up with a list of words we can not use. Then from there any variation of those words would also be forbidden. That way we don't have accidents.

If a new swear comes up, that person would receive a warning and the word would be added to the list. If they proceed to come up with new swears, they would be fined.

This honestly is a common sense rule, but apparently the above is required.

For practical reasons it's better to have list of allowed words, it'll be much smaller than the one having those you cannot use. Besides that'll keep forum clean.

That would certainly leave no room for confusion. We also need to emphasise the difference between IC "chatter" and OOC insulting/flaming (which should be sanctioned in its own right anyway).

AFAIC if a word is said in Freelancer, and I got sanctioned for using the same word, I'd be finding another server to play on.

@Axe: With all due respect, the "powers that be" should be deciding policy based on what we the "mere mortals" (ie. the community) deems acceptable. Anything else would be totalitarian, and TBH I don't know any Disco admin who is like that.

EDIT: Sorry when I say "sanctioned" of course I mean "punished", not "approved":Phttp://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/sanction

Jeez guys, you want more rules, AND a list of words that you are going to check before going off to roleplay
on the server ... I think not. Won't get read by half the protaganists anyway.
If in doubt, just dont effin' say it, or get a little more inventive. I think most of us know how we speak in real
life is probably not acceptable most of the time here, and on the server.
Plus I can hear the first excuse already ... "Its not on the list, so I thought it was ok" ... Yeah right.
