they dont cloak so much as vanish in the flash of the explosion as for large ships i play it off as a catastropic decompression or ejecting the reactor or engine moduele and she escapes via a jump drive or they disengage leaveing her to limp back thinking the explosion is far worse then it is
Escape pod is good. Shot up and left for dead in a smoking wreck adrift in space works too. I have no idea what the endurance of a fighter is supposed to be in freelancer, but just assume life support lasts long enough for you to be found.

The correct way to pirate
You sir need to join da Molly Movement. We need such kind of pirates and the key is to have 2-3 teammates to carry your pod. Bad is when they all die, we try not to allow it often.
