I'm all for /local being the default setting. Obviously, it really would cut down on unnecessary system-comms spam, and seeing as most of the players I know of use local-comms about 90% of the time, it's easier for a lot of us.
Would we miss out on interesting RP? Possibly. But differentiating between system comms and local comms is something that a good role-player ought to know how to do.
I don't mean that in a simple "if you don't know server commands you're not a good RPer" kind of way. I mean that a good role-player knows which channel to use depending on what kind of role he/she is playing.
Some roles do better on system comms, like the kind of advertisers who like to let everyone know that they're in system and providing a service, or if they're spreading some sort of propaganda or something.
For just about everything else, a good role-player knows that local comms are more suited for private affairs between two or more ships within a certain radius. Or pirates, who want to keep a low profile and don't want to broadcast their activities to everyone in the system.
Both types of comms have their place, and when someone knows how to create an interesting role-play atmosphere, they'll know which one to use.
So a /local default gets a thumbs up from me.
Also, I didn't see it mentioned in here, but is that /shields command that was put to use in Dublin today a new feature? Or is that something that's been here a while and I just never knew about it?
And if the mining fields don't replenish after server restarts... then is it just based on how long they go untapped or something? Although I understand if you don't care to shed any more light on this than you already have. I'm just curious now.
IMHO, although I see & like the logic of limited frequency range 'tween nearby 'in system' crafts, alot of RP is lost that could otherwise be used as an inspirational example to others. Losing /local may be a bit of a sore spot for some RP-wise, but in the grand scheme of things, tis best to 86 the option in the spirit of showing people new & old system wide how one should stay in character. After all, people can't emulate what they can't see ::shrug::[/2cents]
::edit- sorry, sometimes I forget how uncommon some of my slang is. To "eighty-six" something is old-school restaurant speak for running out of/getting rid of an item:::$
Quote:I'm torn about the /l being the default behaviour.
On one hand, it will prevent the annoying discussions spamming the system about how to use /l by some newish guy. This is +.
On the other hand, it will mean the some interesting RP won't be heard as regularly. This is - in my opinion.
Thoughts?
i can relate to both concerns ... but i personally think that a default "local" is more beneficial over a default "systemwide" chat.
maybe there can be a compromise though .... like the "log on/log off" messages... is it possible to set a parameter clientside if the player wishes to speak local or systemwide by default?
like "...\freelancer\exe\freelancer.exe" -local -w
which would be windowed mode and default local chat
Actually, while the default chat being /local might stop the new guys from being exposed to some RP, it will also stop them from being exposed to mass spams of ooRP chatter, that is very likely to happen in any highly populated system.
I believe that with a local default instead of systemwide transmissions, it will actually help with stopping the ammount of out of role play people, as they will be more exposed to inRP messages, from pirates, for instance, which would gradually, over time, lead to a better percentage of inRP communication over ooRP. Which would, of course, be a good thing.
So, long story short: My vote goes to /local being default with optional systemwide switch, like Jinx proposed, only backwards

Seriously though, I think the idea of fluctuating ore yields is a bad idea. all it means is that if you were lucky to log in at the right time, you get rewarded, and if you had RL in your way, and you came to mine, and got nothing you lose.
cheesey system, i don't think its a good one IMHO. just do something that makes a single hegemon essential for a mining operation.
Yes. I have met 2 miners that are selling ore.
Rest went to haul themself..(over 7 miners)
Old systems: 70% of miners sold ore. 30% hauled themself.
couldnt see a similar thing in any posts so will do here.
have found on 2 chars so far where i have logged off in space, with no other chars in system. (this is the only time i do it ;-) ) when i log back on i am 10k above the plane from where i last was.
