I've been toying around with it, and A) it works anywhere in a system with access.
So nomatter where you are in the system you can access it.
And B) once you use a tradelane/gate your "profile" is stored in it, so even later it can be pulled up.

Oh, awesome. So Smugglers have to avoid Trade Lanes and use Jump Holes. Makes sense.:D. Though, I imagine the "profile" could possibly become out of date. So a savy smuggler might use the Lanes carrying legit goods, then dump them for something illegal. If it works that way at-least.

I'm still working out just how I'll be using this when the KSP gets the command. At the moment, I'm inclined to forbid all of my KSP officers from using /showscan as hard evidence against smugglers or criminals. I would want them to use it to find potential law-breakers, but the only proof we'll accept for our criminal database will still be a good ol' fashioned 4K-or-less cargo scan.
At least, that's what I intend. I'm still working it out, and I'll wait to see what the limitations of TLAGSNET are before I make any decisions.
For all the other police factions, how they use the information here is up to them.

This set of useful commands could really give police faction activity a lively kick. It's always nice to see house police about, not lost in a sea of navy or military capships who do the job of the police.
Do people think this should only be available for guard ID police ships?
Quote:Also, I may be wrong, but I believe you can only use the Remote Scanning Tool if the person has recently used a Trade-lane or Gate. It might be good to have Cannon clarify.
Correct. It shows only what the ship had when it used the lane/gate.

Nah, I don't think it should only be for Guard ID. Guard ID's are usually too much trouble to get then they're worth, more so for a Police Faction, since there's no advantages to having a Guard ID. Indeed, I don't see the point of Guard ID's for Police. Decision is yours, but I'd have to say no.

I'm of the same opinion as Aphil on this. Especially with the Guard IDs appearing to be phased out before too terribly long, it seems like a waste of time.
Currently my only police characters are in Gallia, but I'm probably going to set up an LPI tonight just to give it a whirl. Could be interesting.
