Seriously, an escort or two and proper arming and armoring on your mining ships, goes a long way to telling a raider to stuff it.
I think everybody knows that your advice helps a lot, so it's good to have it here. =)
But you also know that even in a mining faction it is rather difficult at the moment to assemble a larger group, get escorts, etc. if it happens, it happens because someone pushes really hard for it.
Indie miners and players that are not that well connected, just have no chance of mining in groups. There are no groups in the mining fields.
And hiring escorts and mercs is at the moment impossible because there are almost none. Of course that's no problem for well-connected players who hop on skype and call someone to log whatever he wants. But it is again hard for the not so well connected players.
im drunk and have only read the first post. i found it funny. after killing a hessinn this is the best kick i have had tonight.....might watch the maltese falcon again. thats kinda cool too. whoorah
i love your perception of 'bad' and 'good'. /sarcasm
i have 2 (two) pirate/unlawful characters at the moment. the stable ones. and im not changing their roleplay, because you dont like it. no, im not being nicer to people i meet ingame with them. it is how they are played. want to contribute to roleplay? post bounties on them or get a friend to escort / scount for you. ill be happy to roleplay with mercs, as well.
The problem in the whole deal is that the mining is not as old as the trading and piracy.
In general I find mining broken. It was broken still in the beginning at Penny silver mining, Taos hate between OCs and Colonials, then the Gold rush in Dublin, tons of admin warnings, tons of F1 sanctions, then the whole hate and stuff about virtual credits...
Having full unprotected mining ship alone is just wrong at the first place.
If someone mines alone unprotected it is his problem. I tried both sides as pirate and merc and I am dissappointed as both, as pirate the miners to F1 or not to pay you anyway gank you for example, as merc they wont hire you if they are not shoot by pirate or will offer you 500k to escort them to the end of the route while they made 1000% more at the same time. Since the miners are not so cooperative as players, the pirates reflect their behavior, I would always demand the whole cargo of someone who base huggs, gank and F1. On the other side if the miner is busted by the pirate and offers him bribe the chances of paying not that much are high.
And the solution is so simple really but I have no idea why this is not implemented>
Just make the Hegemon mining bonus doubled as it is now, reduce its cargo to 800 for example and you kill the alone miners, other good option is to increase the dropping rate and reduce the selling prices. So you will have more movement from both pirate miner&hauler sides.
If each shipment is not so valuable for both sides the people wont do stupid things like F1ing or breaking the rules, the pirates wont make same demands but the lost wont be so huge as now if the trader loses his cargo. In such scenario the admins can slap around 35/40% more profit to the mining due to group effort and the risks.
I asked for this like a year ago when I saw that the system is broken. Till now for me there is no idea how this could be a issue.

So huh. When you mine in a group what do you use? We in the GMS have one person on a Heg and the rest on Mafics and Dacites. You know those smaller ships who have a 25% bonus when mining over the big ship right? They make excellent fighters in a snap if you set them up correctly.
As for those of you claiming mining is broken. Are you stupid? Sure, depleting fields is bleh. However, with the recent update GMS had our fastest operation ever. We filled a transport for each member of the operation faster than ever. What that means is we made more cash per minute than ever before even with the nerf to their selling price.
I see no issue here, just people going about mining all wrong. Claiming that only well connected players can mine just means you are too lazy to bother interacting with another player. Doing so might result in you forming a friendship, which means a person to mine with.
Daedric: Yes, you did that as GMS while mining in upper Tau, am I right? There are at least a couple more fields left that could be buffed a bit more (especially those in Omega systems, Omega-11 I am looking at you). Tau-23 mining has always been easy both in terms of prices and security, and it seems things haven't really changed all that much for it.
Anyway yes the whole thing with mining is that it now takes a team to do what a single hegemon could theoretically do on his own back then. If there is one thing that has to be pointed out, it is that mining will generally not recover to the same extent unless it is once again profitable to sit in a field with a hegemon all day and trade the ore with it also when it is full. Indies and teamwork are not words that generally go together on discogc, despite this community's wishes. And mining being a system that now favours teamwork over going solo will remain a stable means of making money for factions, official and unofficial alike, while all the indies make trading their main money making activity once again.
The question that we are faced with however is whether this is what we want, and if not then what do we really want? Personally... as long as there are sufficient numbers of both traders and miners it will be ok. But that's my take on it.
Blodo. Last time. The Omega 11 fields have the highest absolute yield of any field on the server (at least the two "good" circles do). They will not be buffed further, with Daumann's bonus towards uncut valuable gemstones you've already got a whopper of a fill going as long as you can deal with the radiation. Yes, it's no "sit in the field for hours" deal. It's as canon lore states: "Grab as many diamonds as possible before returning to the relative safety of Solarius".
And if mining isn't profitable for indies who don't want to band up, then that is working as designed. It is -exactly- what the mining system was intended for, to promote group play. That said, if groups find that fields are being mined out too quickly then the regenerative rates and/or max capacity of the fields might need to be adjusted.

Prices could use a boost is what I meant, so as to make a load of uncut diamonds more valuable. The haul to Kusari is long, arduous and filled with unlawfuls. The danger warrants it, it's not like the Niobium run which is supersafe (unless you're at war with the RM).
Niobium run passes: Outcasts in T23 (8K from Cali base on the way to the jumphole). 3 Kusari core systems in which Hogosha have free reign. Sigma 13 which can have junkers, dragons, GC, Outcasts and Corsairs. Finally Frankfurt which is reasonably safe as long as Rorry ain't there;)I've never been pirated in New Berlin so I assume few people try that.
Diamond run passes: Omega 11 with a heavy Hessian presence. Stuttgart with as much a single lane bottleneck as Kyushu, so no difference there. Rest of the route is identical to the niobium run, so I'm not sure why you deeming it a whole lot safer... it about evens out. Outcasts for Hessians, basically. So a price roughly equal to the silver and Niobium run makes sense.
[Edit] And I know what you're going to say about the radiation - but the faster fill balances that out. Repair costs in respect to commodity value mined shouldn't even need to be mentioned. I will grant you that it'd make sense for Solarius to keep spare mining lasers on-hand, if you feel they should be added there, that can be done.
