Real life is always a good place to seek inspiration. And space-sims are generally a bad place to go
Why are real life battleships not meant to deal with small boats? Because its a waste of time! You do not spend years developing a great big ship just to have it go out to sea and shoot at rowboats you build it to go out and shoot at other big ships. Dealing with the small boats is what youve got Corvettes and Destroyers for

Dont compare boats with starships. That is like comparing a birds with fishes. They have nothing to do with each other.
Also, we cannot take an example from real life because there are no war-oriented starships in real life. What we can do is take as example starships rom other Sci-Fi shows...

Ive always imagined battleships to be hugh lumbering giants. Hence the slow speed

Remember that in space the ship's weight is not important. But the mass. And there is no friction, so a bigger ship with bigger more powerful engines can perfectly go faster than a fighter because of constant acceleration. And because the higher power output of their engines, as they accelerate constantly without friction... So the final speed of a BS will be higher than the final speed of a fighter. But, on the other side, the fighter, which has a much smaller mass, can acelerate much quicker than a BS...
So:
--Fighter has better acceleration, and takes less time to reach final speed.
--BS can go faster, but it takes more time to reach final speed, because of its mass.

I was thinking more along the lines of using lvl 8 and 9 fighter turrets as a sort of point defence weapon.

Well, if the BS are rebalanced according to this topic, the most powerful weapon of a fighter (excluding torps/missiles) will be weaker than the less powerful weapon of a BS... Making the idea of mounting fighter stuff on a BS obsolete...
Anti fighter weps currently in use are the chaingun solaris and missile weps.
