Wainwight sat in slightly stunned silence. Of all the things he might have expected the woman to say, the truth was right at the bottom of the list. He'€™d been looking forward to the banter, the to-ing and fro-ing that eventually led to a veiled truth actually being delivered. He

'€œAh'€™s'€™a dun heard many thangs, an'€™ a fair amount o'€™ them dun come frum the lips o'€™ yew lawmen, but ah kin tells yew, shure as ah'€™s mah mamma'€™s favourite an'€™ only son, ah aint never once heard the truth so simply put. Ah'€™s'€™a mighty obliged te yew, an'€™ no mistake. We kinda gets used te awl sorts o'€™ lies in mah business. Ah'€™s of a mind te repay yer honesty in kind, an'€™ ah kin tells yew, tha'€™s no mean feat on yer part, gurl. Furst up, yew git mah name. Yew'€™s talkin'€™ te William Wainwright.'€

Anja'€™s eyes widened slightly at the name.

'€œAye, ah kin sees y'€™awl knows '€˜bout meh. Ah'€™s the feller wanted fer breakin'€™ '€˜is cousin outta Vierlande awl them years back. Ah aint pretendin'€™ te be no mas'€™er criminal, an'€™ ah aint lookin'€™ te be makin'€™ the aquaitance o'€™ no more o'€™ youse lawmen, neither. So yer gunna git whut yew came fer, an'€™ ah'€™s gunna be hopin'€™ y'€™awl'€™s gunna keep yer mouth shut '€˜bout our little meetin'€™ '€˜ere. Tha'€™ sound good te yew?'€

Anja nodded quickly.

'€œY'€™awl knows when te keep yer mouth shut an'€™ awl, ah sees. Ah'€™s'€™a likin'€™ yew more by the minute, gurl, ah shurely am. So, yer Maynard feller, yew'€™s right tha'€™ he passt threw '€˜ere a whiles back. Fact is '€˜e came te me '€˜imself, an'€™ paid meh a sum fer passage through to Freeport 5 in Omega-41. Frum there ah arranged fer '€˜im te take possession o'€™ a smawl vessel, one manned kinda thang. Ah aint gut no clue where '€˜e were headed frum there. So, yew knows whut ah knows now. Whut yew do wi'€™ it aint mah business, an'€™ ah don'€™ want it te be neither, y'€™hear?'€ Again, Anja nodded briefly. '€œGood. Y'€™awl kin be standin'€™ yersel'€™ up now, missy. Time fer yew te be leavin'€™, eh.'€

Anja stood and moved to the locked door. The door soon swung open, revealing what was, probably, the ugliest man she had ever set eyes upon. She blinked. The mouth of the face in front of her creased in a grin, and the face transformed from ugly to sinister.

'€œY'€™awl'€™s dun sin the face o'€™ the enemy now, gurl. Hah!'€ Wainwright barked a laugh. '€œAh aint sin a look o'€™ shock like'€™s on yer face since mah cuzin Sally-Ann dun woked up nekid in the hen coop!'€

Anja'€™s mouth worked silently for a few seconds. She was at a loss for words.

'€œY'€™awl jus'€™ head on trew tha'€™ door rite o'€™er thar, eh gurl. We'€™s dun '€˜ere, so we are.'€ Wainwright'€™s head swooped in close as he nodded the direction he expected her to leave. '€œYew don'€™ wanna be comin'€™ back this way no time soon, gurl. Ah'€™s dun yew a favour this time aroun'€™. Don'€™ be '€˜spectin'€™ the same if'€™n ah sees yew agin.'€

As he moved back, Anja shuddered at the implied threat, under no illusions that her life was inconsequential to the man in front of her.

'€œI understand, Herr Wainwright,'€ she said. After a moments thought she held out her hand to him. '€œI thank you for the information.'€

The hand the took hers was cold, and slightly clammy. A sharp tug launched her in the direction of the door, and she exited without a backward glance.
