Actually the fiction I prefer is that the mechanics on Java Station start with the base model and hot-rod the hell out of them to get the RT. Strip it down to reduce weight, add an engine for more power, result is faster and more nimble ship with less armor and cargo.

Somewhere in a shipwright's room on Java

"The people won't buy our ships! We're losing money!"

"Why won't they buy our ships?"

"They say it looks ugly! No civilian wants an ugly ship, no matter how good the performance!"

"I have a wonderful idea, let's get a design team to make our ship look awesome based upon our current designs. That way, rich people will buy em to show off in space!"

"Excellent idea! Let's get to it"

And thus, the new Raven's Talon was born.

PS: The new IMG ship is beyond awesomesauce. Despite it being somewhat non-miner looking, it is still bloody awesome.
