People tend to do exactly such things in case of 'victory'. We all know it, we all hate/love it. Opinions differ here. Personally, I am against such uber raids since not really something can be done except for an anti cap raid with the same amount of ships (mainly caps), what is kind of impossible because the server even died three times or more when there already was a very high amount of ships in Cambridge.
So people scream when they blow up a base of the enemy but cry if enemies blow up their own. It became natural here, I think.

Well...it's a game after all. We all know, that bases will be found sooner or later. That it ends in a massive cap fest is only a matter of time.
The effort is lost...yes. It's understandable that a lot of people are pissed off now. But will a loss prevent you from building another one? Maybe you can learn from it. It's all about experience, at least that's my opinion.
