Pretty simple really: dont build a base in enemy territory and expect the enemy to leave it alone.
I think argueing about where to build a base 'correctly' and at the right position is rather unnecessary, because such bases will appear over and over again. Nothing can be done about it -yet-.
And well...if you are speaking of RP consequences, you should just have a look on the videos and the different ship types, shooting the station there. Though, the Corsairs might be the common enemy of both, BAF and RH, but really..? Bringing RH caps into house core space is kind of questionable, in my opinion.
Nothing can be done about the destruction of the base. It's pretty dead, yeah. And you know how to feel if your own base gets destroyed.
