Disco can be frustrating and it is somewhat difficult figuring everything out. Some take their roleplay so serious that they don't show leniency to new players, which is good in one way (on a scale of immersion and whatnot) but negative for new players who find it all very confusing. I don't think an admin shot your friend, by the way.
Also you will find that a capital ship (cruiser, battleship) can make you a flying target - in most cases you are better off in gunboats/bombers/fighters as the mod is balanced in a way to benefit these ship classes, and it is way easier to be casual/"fly under the radar" in these ships. Plus less rules governing their use and where they can go.
Try making gunboats/fighters/bombers for escorts and keep your capital ships docked in the Omicrons and use them for shooting Nomad NPC's (the blue squids). That won't get you into trouble, you will meet other players out there, and you can see what they do/learn from them and have fun without worrying too much about rules. Think of the Omicrons as the "Wild West".
It takes a bit of time to get comfortable with all the rules, but after a while you will see most are there for good reasons (except some *cough* 6.7, *cough* trader-exception in 5.7). Try asking people on the forums if you are in doubt - people are generally very nice and helpful, and even the ones who have a bit of fun at your expense aren't doing it to annoy you.
I hope you stick around.
Slightly off-topic:
What Ursus said above about escorting on the Zoner ID is 100% correct, but it might be a good idea for admins to streamline things and just let the Zoners escort to avoid confusion about the correct order of actions on that specific ID. It's mostly experienced players that are vocal about things, so changes are mostly done as an extension of that, and by doing so sometimes we might neglect new players/add un-needed layers of complexity to something which could be kept really simple.
