The Germans did indeed make some fine equipment. The Messerschmitt BF109, Focke Wulfe FW 190 and the ME262 were all great planes. To this day German engineering makes some fine product.

As to the P-38 Lightning. It was a great plane but had one major design flaw in the engine...the supercharger. They had a tendency to freeze up or stall all together at high altitude.
