any suggestions on factions and where to start? how much mil will i need too?

Bowex is a good starter faction if you are looking for a good way to get accustomed to the game itself, the mod rules, and how to role play. It is a trade faction and you would be given a small trade ship to start with (Percheron - 2600 cargo-) which you can use the earning from as you wish.

Would also help you learn a lot of the really profitable trade routes and knowledge on the running and maintainence of player bases.
