Doc could only sit, Alice's hands in his, her head on his knees as she cried. For the moment, he felt powerless. He wanted to say that it would be all right...but that would be a lie. He shared the moment, shedding a tear himself. He took a tissue from a nearby box. Ignoring the tears, one on either cheek, he handed her the tissue.
"I hear you," he said softly, "I almost lost my wife last year and I had no one to comfort me. Her fate was out of my hands."
He went silent again and sighed, "I've bought her some time. To attempt to buy more may kill her."
He then removed his hands to get his datapad. "I sent this message Sirius wide on Margaret's behalf, keeping her anonymous. I'm hoping I get a result."
He uploaded the message for her to read.
"It's not much but it's short and too the point."
He then looked at Margaret, sleeping comfortably for the moment and smiled. He saw his own mother as a child, laying on her bed, dying. As he watched, more tears fell. He couldn't save her. "I can't let you die again, Mother," softly escaped his lips.
Yes, this patient, this woman, had not only found there way into his heart but also his mind. The patient sleeping, he escorted Alice out of the room, trying to compose himself before suggesting they get away for a bite to eat.
