What is Role Play?

Madvillian put it very nicely, you take a hypothetical character and act him out like in theatre. That's where easy stuff ends.

First, what are those hypothetical characters? Are they specified in IDes? Nope, ids are not templates we should follow to word to "not get caught". Those characters we (hopefully) create ourselves. Faction lore helps with it, but no more.

Second, how do we act as character? That's where ids come in. It tells us what character should and should not do (mostly). I always viewed ids as something like suggestion, not rule.

Granted, we are talking about rp as roleplay. Much stuff that happens is more in line of trolling, though labelling it rp is quite convenient for most. And we are also not talking about when rp is used to hide behind being someone else.


P.s.. I wondered for quite some time, what would psychiatrist say when he sees all shit that is going on here. Mainly, what mental disorder "hardcore" rpers have.
Edit: before anyone gets angry, I also view myself as hardcore rper.
