From what I heard, this remake doesnt really improve anything (unless you install mods, at which point i dunno), and 12$ price is not THAT cheap, it costs more than playstation family remake. I would recomend going emu, if only for the ability to save everywhere. I also heard steam sometimes messes saves up.
Also, i dont understand why everyone loves this game. I bought it for ps3/psp and abandoned after playing for some time. No urge to come back to it. If anything, I would recomend you check out ps2 emulator, particulary xenosaga series if you are interested in rpg. And have I mentioned FF12 is my favorite ps2 game?
EDIT: ALSO check out persona 3 for ps2. In UNDUB ofcource.
