Then why can't this be achieved via a Official Faction or SRP'ing? You RP the reason why you should have one via an SRP, or to a faction you are in. That isn't cutting it off from everyone, it just makes the process to get one a little longer, and then either of those options would demand a RP reason to have one.

Plus, if it were to happen, and if the puppet masters of Disco decided to make the Neph only available via those two means, then those like yourself Tel who have one, could make a RP post or submit a reason to keep it, and why you/your char needs it. Won't cost you money, but provides an avenue to provide a logical and RP reason to continue it, instead of "It's big and shiny and has guns. Can't I haz?"

At this point, it's just all suggestion and thoughts, but it would be nice to see at least some restriction. I guess my thought it, I love the look of the Leviathan/Persphone and the Necrosis. Two ships you can only get via SRP. Part of the appeal is that you rarely see them. They are a sight, that when you see them, your mouth both inRP and inRL drops. So maybe not as drastic, but it would be nice to have that feeling when you see a Neph, instead of the stigma that everyone has a Neph somewhere because it's big and powerful.
