govedo, i am not sure you realize the actual basis of the problem.
there is no rule, not even an unwritten rule that states that "restricting your own tools elevates your quality of RP or acceptance by any means" - most official factions do it, cause they WANT to do it, cause THEY believe that it does improve the RP.
this is an entirely and 100% voluntary process. - and the question asked is ... "is it?"
i have talked to a few players who DO believe that restricting oneself is beneficial. - but as you say, then you hit the wall when you meet someone who does not believe in the same. - thats not entirely when the problem starts. - the problem starts when players start to blame others for their own decisions.
so - easy question for you...
do you think that limiting YOURSELF makes your roleplay better?
and less easy
why do you think that it is bad when other players do not share YOUR point of view in that matter?
edit: you may be one of those who state that the extra powers of official factions are useless and pointless. - but i am also sure that NO faction wants those "useless powers" stripped and given to indies by default. - so it cannot be THAT useless after all. and in the OP i state that - being a fairly tested system - it may not harm to give factions more power regarding these powers - instead of pointing out how unfair it is that others do not want to limit themselves like factions.
i mean - when you spend your time whipping yourself for your sins - do you expect the society to do the same, just cause it causes you pain - yet you still believe that it is the "right thing to do" ? other people simply do not need to share that believe, and they are not to blame for it, the only one responsible for it is the one doing the whipping.
he should be fully fulfilled and happy for doing it for his believe - not compare himself to others. - if there is no one to follow his example - he can either believe that they are wrong and go try convince them - or leave them be. so good luck convincing indies to limit themselves for your reasons.
edit2: i do (think) i understand why factions like to do it. as i explained in the OP ( pyramid structure ) - but i am still not convinced that this is helping factions.
whenever i see factions struggling - i just HAVE to remember the late Douglas Adams when he wrote about the Kakapo. "when creatures realize that they are on the brink of extinction they usually do what they do the best [play to their strength]. - in the case of the kakapo the best thing he does is to breed really really slowly and inefficiently"
and for me - what factions in the last years have done absolutely BEST is to install self limitations - and their reactions to extinction seems to be "lets do what we are best at .. and try even harder to limit ourselves"
