A woman walks into the interview room, dressed in full Air Force dress uniform. From her uniform it's clear she's an Officer cadet, her name tag confirming with "Cdt V. Hants". She salutes the recruitment officer.
"Royal Air Force Cadet Officer Victoria Hants reporting, sir!"
"Please, sit down."
She takes off her hat and puts it under her arm, sitting at the desk.
"So you want to move from the Air Force to the Armed Forces? After Leeds, you wouldn't be the first. Why do you want to join the Armed Forces? We're not in the habit of just letting people join for revenge."
"Well sir, I was training at Leeds, I was finishing my flight and officer training-"
"Yes I see that, Officer training with specialisation in command and advanced battle strategies. Very impressive, but I don't need to hear your resume after seeing it already."
The recruitment officer opens the file on his desk with her record inside. She was born on Planet Cambridge, studied at the advanced scientific academies and then moved onto air-force officer training at the start of the war with the Gauls, Studying to be an commander in advanced battle tactics and Battle strategy. She had logged 40 flight hours so far before the Leeds incident.
"I was there when they bombed from orbit, sir. There was nothing we could do. For all the people... that were... stationed there, we could only run. I learnt then that I needed to reach higher... literally."
"Being in the Air Force isn't useless Cadet. It's a worthwhile and much needed service."
"Maybe. But I joined because I wanted to do my part in the war against the Gauls. But when Leeds was attacked, I felt useless to fight back. I could only gather some flight crew and escape."
"I read what you did. It doesn't seem useless if you saved lives"
"I couldn't save them all. The people I trained and studied with for years, most of them gone. That tends to put things in perspective."
She sighs and looks to the side.
"Sorry sir. A little perspective and change someone's priorities. I want to do this. This is where I feel I need to be sir."
"Thank you Cadet."
The recruitment officer stands up, offering a hand to Victoria. She accepts and they shake hands.
"We'll review you application and let you know when we've come to a decision. Dismissed Cadet."
