Jean was born in a middle-class family on Denver. His father was a musician, while his mother worked at a small pharmaceuticals company. Ever since his teenage years he was interested in military and wanted to become a soldier. After finishing high school he started West Point Academy to get his papers and join the Navy. He was assigned to the crew of LNS-Kosciusko battlecruiser and served eight months on the ship. After retirement of Kosciusko's captain Archer, he was moved to the fighter section of the Navy.
