Did you watch the video? Because the guy whom has the disease in question actually appreciates the "stupid faddy internet thing" for precisely what you are saying: It is generating awareness about the disease, specifically people like you who have not heard of it.
While you think it's stupid, it is working and getting people to make an unknown disease into the public light, which in turn is getting people to act.
