I can't understand why people say Skyrim is bad. It's surely different, when compared to Morrowind. I just pointed out here that I have found a game that interested me so much I had to make a break from Tamriel and enter world of Amalur. Game is solid, plot is... well. Not -that- generic, but we must save world again (+ somekind of amnesion and looking who you truly are).
A lot of sidequests, rather big world (I don't care if intersections, you do not feel claustrophonia - yet some areas are VERY huge and rather varies from each other - think of WoW here, I believe), which is beautifuly made. Due to the fact that author and producer was R.A. Salvatore, it kinda looks like D&D but with Fable touch (that's why I poke that game here, plus the other reason is this is how Fable should look like in some moments). Hero is mute (alike in KOTOR) but dialogue ring reminds about Mass Effect or Dragon Age. Game is action RPG (like DA), but somehow more spectacular. And crafting. Crafting, so blacksmithing, alchemy, gem crafting (called sagecraft, in which you can mix up gems into more powerful ones). Oh yes, you can be "the bad guy" and give yourself rampage (you can't kill the main characters though, and traders perhaps).
