I would reccommend to stay to Photoshop as it would benefit you to learn off of it, if you feel like if it's too complex, GIMP may be a little bit more simpler for you. Also, I've found paint.net to be absolutely awful with little control to the brushes and how you can work with the canvas, and has an annoying UI. It also has less features compared to GIMP and some other programs, so I don't reccommend it. (though that is my opinion)

Might I suggest to learn basic typography(basically art with letters) rather than use the same font from the net over and over? Maybe try playing about by getting a screenshot from ingame and see what you can do to it? Always good to practice.

Those pictures are sweet and simple, which makes it very tidy as a signature, superb from someone who's only just got minimal skill in it.

Though I'd like to point out that the "junkers congress" could have had some subtle colouring inside the lettering as the dropshadowed lettering blends in with the background, see the "r" and "e" of it. Just be weary of that.
