Interview with a madman

From: Dr. Selar Director Sirius Psychiatric Institute
To: BH Command Group

Our assessment of the A51 group continues as you have requested. On all scales that we have they are clinically insane. If you have any doubts, just read the provided tale that Deacon told us when we asked him to give us an idea of where they came from. The fact that they are functional is to be blunt, miraculous. We are continuing our study of the psychotropic drugs they had with them that they call purples. Though we can duplicate the pills we can find no reason they should have the effect they seem to have. On the other hand the pills DO have a normalizing effect on them and they are functional as long as they take their meds. They seem to be proficient enough in their fighting skills and I expect they will do fine as bounty hunters.

I have several questions though. Where did they come from? The phenotypes are all mixed up. There are some in their group from all the major houses and some I frankly cant identify. Where were the purples developed? I and my colleges have never seen anything like them. There are mysteries here that I would like answers to.

You dont think that some of what they claim could be true? Do you?

Interviewer: Dr Selar
Subject: Deacon (No known last name)

Soooo many questions. "Where did you come from?" "What are your intentions?" "What the heck is a waffle?" Uhh ohhh that doesn't make sense. Who, how, what? Bah! Enough!

I am Deacon. I am the teller of stories and the keeper of history of A51. Our stories are rich and our history is full. There are wars and great battles, intrigue and betrayal. There are great alliances and equally fierce enemies. There is the destruction of entire universes and the great migrations to new homes. There is change........ there is always change.

For you to have any understanding of who we are and where we come from, there are two things you must just accept: First, there are life forms in the universes that have technology so advanced that it is indistinguishable from magic. These beings go by different names in the different universes. The most common name for them is A-do-min, though in the place we came from they were known as gods. Glock was in charge and the Horsemen did his bidding to keep the balance between good and evil.

The other thing that you must accept is that there are many other universes that are very similar to this one, but they all have their differences. Things tend to be in places you dont expect. The equipment changes, the natives change, and the politics are always different.

In our home universe there were 8 powerful groups. Four good and four evil. As I said, the balance was kept by the Horsemen. They ensured no faction got too out of hand. Over time Glock called me to serve as one of the Horsemen, which I did. Things went on for a while and I watched as the universe was shaped and changed. I helped keep the balance, I did Glock's bidding. Working for even a little god tends to change your perspective on things a bit. Then one day, Glock summoned the other Horsemen and myself to tell us that the universe was ending and that we must find a way to forge the 8 factions and the nonaligned forces in our universe into one group and find a new home.

Pirates, demons, military, alien overlords, police, mercenaries and freelancers were combined into one force. We have been several places in the multiverse and now we have settled here. We have found a place for ourselves amongst the Bounty Hunters. Some unnamed Muckety muck in the BH guild thinks we might be useful. Apparently they feel there is a need for Old school Bounty Hunters"; the kind that can go into systems the police and other bodies of law enforcement cant, turning chaos into order, pancakes into waffles, and ordinary boots into weapons of mass destruction. Well. I dont know about that. Kane decides such things for us now.

Our politics are simple: "We are nice until it is time to not be nice." If it doesn't conflict with that, perhaps Kane will go along with this unknown Muckety mucks plan.

Now the doctors will tell you that all I have told you is a "delusion" or a construct" created by my "shattered mind" so that I can "continue to function without looking at the truth" of my past. They will then tell you that the entire A51 force is in a similar condition. They will of course take credit for keeping us functional by handing out those purple pills. (They also take credit for the invention of the waffle. The bastards.) I will admit the purples do help me concentrate a bit.

I can understand how the doctors might think we are a bit crazy. I mean, our heads aren't in a good place, and we know it. And it is kind of difficult to believe that a guy that looks like he is from Kusari is actually a demon, but they don't manifest in front of most people, be thankful they don't. And the Alien overlords, well if you squinted just right they always looked a bit like Rhinelanders. So I guess its no wonder they think we made it all up. It matters little, we know what the truth is. If they think we are crazier than we are, so be it.

So what do you do when the war is over? What do you do with all the soldiers that have seen too many of their friends die? What do you do with those that have a highly developed skill for battle, but whose heads are just not in a good place? You can't just turn them lose on civilized society. They would be a danger to those in so-called "normal" society. You might think of killing them off as a "danger to the society" with burned minds and twisted souls. But then again, you might need them some day. There will always be another enemy. There will always be another war.

As with most things the solution was simple: Take all the functionally-insane fighters that we can find, form them into an elite fighting force, then dump them on the Bounty Hunters. They are seperated from the "normal" populace and they get to persue the one skill they have, and perhaps maybe they can even make the systems safer. If the price is right.

So thus, the Asylum 51 was born: A group of insane pill-popping, crayon-junkie Bounty Hunters. Glock save us all.
