Well, beside that, what actually was the biggest nuisance was this:

Personally, that kind of ruins the engagement since that kind of lag makes the target un-hittable..
Also as far as the ID rules go, you are well within them as I believe in the Freelancer ID there's a line that states:
"Can attack any ship in self-defense or to protect an friendly or allied ship. "
Now, while freelancer RP is quite generic, you should best specify it before engaging, in this current case, Samura being your partners, rather than just claiming that you're going to defend the base. I believe that's what raised confusion regarding that matter.
Sorry if post may sound unfriendly, but it's sole purpose is it to clear these things up.
