I believe that leaving the map is quite reasonable. I'm not going to pay a pirate just because diverting from my route overall costs me a profit-being pirated once makes you and your parent corporation look like an easy target, a sheep to be shorn every time he comes by. And while that pirate is off chasing you, he isn't targeting your colleagues, so they're making their runs on-schedule, and the company still makes a net profit.
EDIT: Oh, and pirates with grudges are bad RP, too. I will never tire of mentioning the incident wherein a Corsair Lunchbox chases me down, shoots me down to a bar-and-a-half, makes his demand, and never stops firing. Legal? Yes. He didn't get sanctioned. Bad RP? YUS!
