What a dumb question, I thought. We were both playing dumb. The MND were scarcely involved with the affairs of the CTI, and would not have known a lowly detective such as myself. There was a risk telling her that, I realize now, as either she would shoot me, or the police for abandoning my post. Perhaps what intriguied me the most was that she believed that the MND were bold enough to interrogate citizens such as myself on a whim. She thinks were under a police state, I thought, then let it wither.

"The MND have other things to worry about than what a lonely detective does with his work." I squinted slightly, to look skeptical. "Regardless, they're not involved with this case. They wouldn't care about the death of a middle aged man, or the cheap investigator that put his hand up out of compassion. I remembered the scathing way the intelligence officer spoke at the CTI Headquarters. Amateur work, I recalled, and now it was beginning to show through.
