Well... I was born yet when piracy was much more active around. Also pirates used to demand 1-2-3 mill. In those magic times 5 mill was cosidered as a high demand. The only annoying pirates were ones who docked on IMG base in Omega-3 and wanted full cargo just to sell it a while after... It was free cash and kinda

Currently, 5 mill is considered as 'low' fine... Pirates asking for 7-8m are extremaly common thing and there are a few guys who even ask for 10, 15 or more... If you try to RP that it's a big amount, they just say 'You can sell it for 50m profit'. While in fact it is much less (about 42 or 46 if I remeber well) and - 15-20m to buy the whole stuff. I'm just wondering if this behaviour is due to ignorance or they're just guys like ekhm... Well.
In most cases you try to RP that you would prefer to keep the cargo, but you're ready to pay the fine. I've met a few guys through those years and they all agreed on that. I don't mind being pirated, it brings activity, interactions, rp and whatsoever, but well... Behaviour or some guys is just pissing you off and you start to wonder if it isn't better just to dock at the nearest facility and don't care about them, which frankly isn't fine. Like someone has left it somewhere on forums: "Don't ask for too much, don't scare the traders"
To sum it up: behaviour of some pirates could be really annoying and IT'S the thing that kills the server, not all the traders docking around. Just if they can dock and get +/- 30mil profit or go ahead to speak with the pirate, then end this long route just to earn 5 mil is kinda... a bad idea.
