For example in Overwatch, if you're a subhuman pile of poodle *****, I can never play a match with or against you ever again. Neat eh? And if you were skilled and kicked my ass but weren't a complete asshole about it, I can prefer you in matchmaking. Awesome, right?

Actually, they've removed the 'avoid this player' feature. Why they did so and if they plan on reintroducing it, though, are two questions I can't answer.

I've only been able to piece together what happened through third parties but it all seems to point to people acting like assholes. It would be nice to get clarification though. Where we seem to disagree is to what extent assholery should be tolerated. My limit is quite short, yours might be longer.

I agree on this, at least. I don't deny that at some, if not all, of the six people banned were asking for some sort of warning or punishment - but an instant, inexplicable permaban straight from the blue is not the solution that should have been applied, nor should it have been done in such an opaque and unhelpful manner. Furthermore, since you're a relatively recent returner to the community (I think?), you may have missed the numerous and glaring other instances wherein the staff have repeatedly proven themselves unamenable to any sort of negotiation, change, or otherwise being held accountable and/or responsible for their actions. I, personally, feel more than a little frustrated at having to play the same broken record again and again.

Actually, it doesn't look like they've been banned for anything specific at all. The only admin who even bothered to put any sort of effort into explaining the rationale behind the ban in their sanctimonious little justifications for the punishment was Jansen, and even then it's just a set of opinions on the matter. I remain very, very, very skeptical that all six of those named people deserve a permanent ban in the slightest - in particular, the most glaring example is @Karst. I'm not sure if you know him at all (you don't), but the idea that someone so helpful, self-sacrificing, and ultimately passionate about the success of this mod and community should be permabanned for his efforts leaves a foul taste in my mouth, for one. The fact that people are willing to overlook this kind of thing in the name of 'life goes on', or any number of other flimsy excuses that basically translate to 'I don't care and neither should you', is just as disgusting.
