Weapons: What are their uses?

Educate me please!

1. Mortars and Missles: I see a lot of talk about equiping mortars and missles. I see they do massive damge. I bought a couple for my cruiser and Prison Liner. What use are they? By the time those slow moving mortars and missles get to their target, I have killed it. My ship goes faster than the Mortar does. Of course, I am fighting mostly fighters (pirates) who attack me. I have never seen a mortar or missle hit one. Are they mainly for capital ship fights? Is their only use for taking out battleships and such?

2. Flak cannons. They don't have much description in game. Are they like the flak cannons in WWII? Do they shoot a hail of small objects like a shotgun blast? If so, they would be great for my LTrain and prison liner for pesky pirates. Or, are they another slow moving missle weapon?
