Personally, I take an "I'm not a know it all" approach to my characters story. I tend to avoid reading up on things my chars wouldn't know about inRP so that I can remain unbiased as well as removing any possibility for metagaming. This is of course the main reason that I am still such a noob at this game even after nearly 6 years of being a member of this community, but it keeps me rooted in the present and true to my characters personality and allegiances.
Another thing I do is RP the actual crew of my vessel. It annoys me to no end when someone plays their char as the sole member aboard a massive Battleship which should have hundreds of crewmen. Even on a gunboat, I RP a comms officer and one or two gunnery officers as well as the pilot in conjunction with my actual character. Plus, it makes for interesting possibilities when ingame, talking with another player. It makes the dark of space feel less empty.
