You're overthinking it entirely.

First, never try to get feedback or approval from the community, this place is a fickle hellhole of opinion.

Second, learn about your selected faction including its ID, limits and ingame description. Reading any previous faction info is a pretty good way to get an overall picture and solid grounding.

Finally, ask for anyone who is interested to contact you and go from there. Keep it simple and fun, have scheduled fly times and don't be afraid to push the boundries a little.

That's all there is to it really, you just gotta hold your nose and take the plunge.
