To put it bluntly.
This all stems from the false assumption that roleplaying equals just talking. Whereas it's actually about playing a role. The hint is in the name.
Why would a pirate stop and talk with his mark beyond conveying his demands, which usually come down to your money or your life? This is what the average pirate is after, it's not rocket science. Stopping to have a drawn out conversation with the trader he intends to rob while a police patrol might be a lane away isn't really what I would call - "good RP".
The term roleplaying is very subjective, it's up to you what you are going to do with it. As I said the goal in fine is to make the experience interesting, at least it should be ^^ When you say : I am a pirate and as such I don't need to be smart, well you are just looking for an excuse.
