While most have offered RP advice, I have some practical advice. ;)

After you F2, aka Go To a waypoint, when you get around 2k from the Jump Hole or Jump gate, switch to Free Flight and cruiser right into the JH or the mouth of the JG, then hit Dock.

This allows you to save at least 20 seconds so there is no annoying docking sequence.

Same thing with crash-docking on planets. Cruise up to the Mooring Fixture and hit F3.

This method can also be used when entering 'Trade-lanes' just look for the green lights - fly towards the middle of the circle, just as you seem to pass through hit the F3 key

Jump-gates just aim for the circle formed by the closed jumpgate, and as you seem to pass through the opening hit the old F3 key, moments later the 'Jump-gate' cut scene will start
