No, you're not required to join a faction to have fun here. However, I will say this, it really helps. I can tell you that I have a LOT more fun flying with the XA than I would if I did the Xeno thing indie. That's not to say that others don't have fun playing indie Xenos, but I think being a part of a group makes it even more rewarding.
