Havent played SC for quite long time, but I love it, even more than FL.
I will not say there is a "best" race, because there really isnt any. My favourite is Protoss though... They just fit me the best.

I can also say I have few PvP games behind me, but I didnt excel too much there...

Zergs: If you know what to do, Hydras rule... Ultras if the game is too long. Muta rush can win you the game too...

Terrans: Hardest race to play, but very adaptable... They usually need special strategies against other races and if you lot want to know, battlecruisers suck compared to other units you can have for the same price.

Protoss: Easiest race to play... If zergs rush zerglings at the start, do not hestiate to send your probes to defend... And if you can, rush Zealots in the beggining... Can win you a game many times. Problem of carriers is, that they are fairy good only against PC, when fighting players, especially terrans, lockdown is deadly... Masses of Scouts on the other side.......

Remember, the worst enemy in the PvP games is time. If you can use your time better, than the opponent, if you are faster, than the opponent, 1/2 game is won for you already.
