here is what I have decided on and how to use them.

mortars-cap ship combat/killers
missiles-fighter killers
flak turrets/cannons-
great for taking out fighters but if u hit once the radius is so great it will prob. get allied npc factions mad at u if u hit them (if they're in the general vicinity). I've had this happen to me several times... its annoying.
